1960's Photo

I have placed a question mark where I don't know a name and a question mark where there is reason for doubt. I've used 'Mr' where the first name is missing. Photo from the 1960's. The occasion is not known and only some of the persons are college staff.

The good news is...

Instead of a wall we have this... At the bottom is the mausoleum of Gora Bibi.

Clayton & Roley,
Thank you for taking the initiative with Elton to restore Constantia & to return her & the estate to its
original state.
Additionally, I want to thank:
George Shepherd for pictorially informing us of the Bund construction, addition to Spence Hall & the destruction of the Lat.
The originators of the Major General Claude Martin Memorial Trust: Nobel Laureate Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Dr. Vijay Mohan Kohli, Gautam Kaul, Ambassador Raghunath, Prem Behl, Walter Johnson et. al and Rosie Llewellyn Jones, Warren Cox, Trevor Gillibrand, Vinoth Kumar and all Martinians & friends of La Martiniere
for their continued efforts to preserve the Martiniere legacy.
I've included Martinian contacts from Scotland, Canada & the USA (See Cc. before Rob Jordan) so that
when there's a concerted effort for a Petition Drive & Fundraising Campaign to reclaim the Golf Club, relocate the Bund along the river bank, repair the Lat & refill the Lake there will be a global outpouring of support.
Vive La Martiniere!

Hello All
Old Boy Roley Sharpe and I have written to Elton concerning the Martiniere issues. Attached for information is the letter and the very professional LMA Trust schema prepared by Roley. So far we have not received a reply.
What to do?

Jumbo,
In view of your having recently visited the Mart, your tacit acceptance of Koch's 'Mahayudh' quote  leaves one with a sinking feeling concerning the future of the College in Lucknow.  The deleterious neglect by those in government of an historic institution which has produced students who have gone on to accomplished much for India and, indeed, the world is an appalling indictment of the state of affairs in Uttar Pradesh.
Jumbo, a heap of trust, within people like myself, lies in the hope that those Martinians with the dedication, influence and stick-to-itiveness of those such as yourself, Bryan Cooke, Patchy Pachauri,  Warren Cox, Trevor Lee, Roley Sharpe and the many stalwarts I have failed to mention (please forgive me) can and will right this corruption and neglect of an historic and worthy institution.
Vive La Martiniere!

Totally agree Koch

History is littered with the detritus of long lost civilisations and monuments. One has only to look at the tombs in the magnificent Lodhi gardens at Delhi which are damaged by graffiti and and where boys play cricket against its ancient walls. I'm afraid what we are witnessing is 'The Age of Kali" aptly described by master writer William Dalrymple. Sadly, India does not preserve its past in many instances. Can you imagine the Lat located in a western country? Without doubt it would be preserved as a landmark heritage site by the government.
The Lat was never preserved even in our time - it was only the lake with its resident croc that dissuaded boys from defacing its walls with graffiti. I'm afraid that now it will linger only in our memories and photos
regards

Jumbo

"like the dying soldier

 still holding on
                     to his sword and hope
as life slowly ebbs away "

Jumbo, Bob after being fed with a regular dose of sacrilegious pics doesn't this verse sum up a Martinian's feeling and dilemma.

Was a toilet??

It looks like the toilet, 2nd pic, has been converted into servant quarters. I don't think the 'washies and back' order is given anymore as a punishment and whether it's good or bad one can't say. I remember when one chap, not aware of Mart tradition, threatened to bring goondas to beat up (may be a monitor) and Govadia beat him up good and proper and told him to go ahead. That isn't possible today because we have a different breed that has pervaded all walks of life. Even the teachers are something...
Beyond the pillars, in the top pic is a wall cutting off a powerstation-of-some-sort and the extension of Jiamau, just where so many years ago Hans Nagar rode that buffalo.

Desmond Shaw, 1970's Principal

The bund (embankment separating the lat from the school) came up during the 1970's when Desmond Shaw was the principal. Old Martinians cannot understand how the state authorities couldn't be persuaded to route the bund from behind the lat. The pic shows Des and his wife happily settled in Bombay.

There once was a lake!

In this pic I think I see Cedric Innes, Kochin Wu and Simeon?? and the others ???

May 3 Countdown continues

Monday May 3 has turned out cloudy like yesterday. The usual ‘April showers’ that ‘bring May flowers’ seems to be coming late.
